At David Shaffer Law, we specialize in civil rights cases for women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities, and have represented hundreds of women and minorities in nationwide class actions against federal law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, US Secret Service and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. We also represent individuals with disabilities in seeking accommodations in the workplace and represent them in employment litigation. We also act in a legal consulting capacity to large tech corporate clients.

Job description

We are looking for a motivated individual in assisting the law firm’s day-to-day activities, specifically someone who is interested in civil rights, Title VII, and ADA cases. This position includes filing federal documents in the Case Management and Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) Judiciary system, upkeeping the firm calendar on a daily basis, and tracking important deadlines while planning accordingly with the respective attorneys on the case. This position also handles the money coming in and out of the firm in the form of sending out invoices, handling payroll for the law firm, and ensuring the payments from individual and corporate clients. As this is a small law firm, the legal assistant plays a large role in balancing each case and communicating with attorneys, staff and clients. This position receives a lot of autonomy and is trusted with highly sensitive and important communications that include sending and responding to emails in a professional and timely manner that reflects well on the law firm.

We are currently working remote so you must be able to productively work on your own time without a shared office space. As this may change in the near future, employee must live in the Washington, DC area on their start date and during their employment with the firm.

David Shaffer Law, PLLC, is seeking an associate with 2+ years of litigation experience to join a small, growing civil rights firm specializing in class actions, employment discrimination and disability rights and advocacy on behalf of persons with disabilities. This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a growing firm that receives national attention for its class actions, cases involving sexual harassment and assault and represents companies providing accessibility for people with disabilities. We offer a collegial, informal, and flexible working environment with the opportunity to work mostly remotely in a team-oriented approach.

We are seeking a motivated individual who can work independently on smaller cases and be part of a team on some of the cases with national impact. We are specifically seeking individuals with disabilities and/or experience working with the disability community and the ability to interact successfully with members of the team and clients with disabilities. Applicants should have an excellent academic record and have strong writing and litigation skills. D.C. Bar required, and Maryland or Virginia a plus. Salary negotiable based upon experience.
